Deep tissue/sports massage

Deep tissue/ sports massage aims to improve the suppleness and flexibility of muscles and joints by eliminating toxins embedded in muscle fibres, minimise scar tissue build up and remove adhesions.

It can also improve circulation which enhances cell nutrition, and reduces the recovery time of damaged or stressed tissues.

How does Sports Massage differ from other types of therapeutic massage?

Why is it different from other massages?

Some of the basic techniques in sports massage can be the same as those used in other forms of therapeutic massage, but the therapist may apply the techniques more deeply and firmly. Some sports massage techniques are designed to shift an old or chronic injury back into its acute stage, to trigger the body’s natural healing process to complete the process of repair.

A regular sports massage is recommended if you’re always pushing your body physically. How long you should go between treatments depends on the frequency and intensity of your training session.

Benefits of Sports Massage may include:

Sports Massage Therapy is of great benefit in any case of repetitive strain or muscle overuse injury. This may be due to frequent or intense sports training, or for the non athlete, even an unaccustomed bout of intense gardening or D.I.Y!

  • Increase blood flow around the body
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved rate of tissue repair
  • Pain relief in muscles and joints
  • Increased recovery after you’ve done strenuous exercise
  • Reduced risk of further injury

 For the sports person:

  • Post event to relieve soreness and assist with the removal of lactic acid and other waste products
  • During training to deal with existing injuries, and to allow you to train to your full potential and recover optimally

It is recommended that you do not train for 12 hours following a massage to allow your body to adapt and recover. Training before massage is fine.

What our customers have to say about us:

“Currently marathon training, I’ll rely on the girls for monthly massage which I see as my “monthly service” and always leave feeling like I have new legs and new found confidence. They always do their best to see me at short notice even if it’s to deal with those phantom niggles that only seem to present in the week of a big event. I can’t thank Lindsey and Danielle enough for their expertise, patience and friendship in the last few years. I will always highly recommend Sunderland Physiotherapy Clinic.”
