Sports Massage for Runners

With the running season officially started now, we hope your training is in full swing…. but have you thought about adding in sports massage to your schedule?

We have been looking after Sunderland Strollers since 2010, can you believe it and know how important it is to you guys and girls to be in top fitness and prevent injury in order to achieve your running goals.

So be pro active, add it to your training schedule and give your body optimum performance power, in the shape of a Sports Massage.

Why a sports massage?

Sports Massage is a great tool to utilize on and off-season, not only to help keep overused muscles nourished but to also maintain flexibility and suppleness to enable peak performance throughout.  A sports massage consists of a combination of strokes, which is tailored to your specific needs and events to target both superficial and deep muscles.

Injury prevention

Regular treatment sustains your muscles, tendons and ligaments ensuring they are pliable and at their strongest by flushing out unwanted toxins. By getting into a routine of regular sports massage, you are reducing the possibility of overused muscles occurring in the first instance, therefore decreasing the chance of major injuries that follow on from this.

Enhances lymphatic system & blood circulation

A sports massage stimulates the lymphatic system with deep long strokes to aid in the removal of toxins and waste products such as lactic acid to keep the muscles healthy and reduce fatigue. During treatment your blood vessels dilate, opening up to allow oxygen and nutrients pass through more freely to those overworked muscles that need that little bit extra TLC.

Relieves mental stress

Taking care of your body also takes care of your mind. As well as exercise, massage also releases endorphins, which is known as the body’s ‘natural happy hormone’. Fitting a training regime around full time work can sometimes feel like a heavy workload and you may lose your enthusiasm to train now and then. Giving yourself time to re-charge and re-set throughout a massage is sometimes all you need to increase focus and find your motivation!

When should I get a sports massage?

There is no right or wrong time to get a massage when training for an event. If you keep up to date with your maintenance sports massage then you should be able see a difference in your performance within your training and at events.

For optimal race day performance it is advised to have your pre-even treatment 24-48 hours beforehand. This enables the body to react and rest from the massage, giving you the best opportunity to succeed.

Your post event sports massage, again, should be scheduled 24-72 hours after race day.  Depending on the event you may suffer from DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), which can make the massage painful if you come in too early.

How often should I get a sports massage?

Ideally a runner should have a regular sports massage at least once a month. This enables you to keep your muscles supple and flexible, thereby giving your body the best possible chance to maintain proper form with full range of movement, correct imbalances from over compensating, recover from general training aches and prevent injuries from occurring/re-occurring.

What happens at my treatment session?

First of all (if you are new to the clinic) you will fill in a registration and medical history form, which is looked over and discussed where needed with the therapist. If you have been before we will still do a quick recap of your medical history. You can then explain what you are looking to gain from the session, whether that is for a specific injury, maintenance massage or general aches.

The therapist will then carry out an objective assessment if needed looking at posture, range of movement and restrictions. A treatment plan will be agreed depending on the assessments and carried out accordingly.

From this treatment we will advice what is best going forward, whether massage is good for you or if there is an injury a Physiotherapy consultation is likely to be suggested in order for you to get a thorough assessment and diagnosis and the correct treatment.
