Exactly 5 years ago this week (January 2013) we moved out of our premises in The Aquatic Centre and into our newly converted clinic at 37 Mere Knolls Road, Sunderland.
We had been in The Aquatic Centre since 2010. Renting a small room where we provided all our therapies, did our own reception and admin work and all of the behind the scenes things for the business. It was a great place, but we simply needed more space.
So after a short while of looking we found a closed down coffee shop in Roker and after a little bit of negotiation we were able to start leasing 37 Mere Knolls Road, or Sassy as it was then called. We spent almost 3 months converting and refurbishing the premises, making it fit for purpose and adding things like a disabled toilet and internal access ramp, along with all the boring things like re-wiring, plumbing and building walls.
Once the fun bits of decorating and final touches had been done we were ready to let everyone have a look at our work.
At the time, the business was called Totally Tranquil. I ran it with my then business partner Danielle.
We planned a big open day, with cake, drinks, raffle prizes, a chance to meet the staff & all those that had helped with the refurbishment (which was mostly family and friends) and generally just let people have a look around.
In the early hours of the open day it started snowing and it didn’t stop. We were so worried it would put people off.
To our amazement we opened the doors and people came in their droves. We were over the moon to have over 70 people visit that day and show us their support. We still have an amazing client base that we are so grateful for.
Over the 5 years of being at Mere Knolls the business has changed somewhat. My business partner and I separated the business and I continued within it on my own. I took in some new staff to support me in the Physiotherapy and Massage work and also in the admin side of the business. In 2016 we also took the bold step to rebrand the business, moving away from the spa like image that was often associated with the name Totally Tranquil. Spa we were not! Anyone that has ever had Physiotherapy for a pain or problem will know it is far from a spa treatment.
So we relaunched as Sunderland Physiotherapy Clinic and from there have continued to grow.
In 2017 we took on more and more Women’s Health Physiotherapy clients, an area of Physio we are passionate about and with this work we launched The Mummy MOT. We are the only Physios in the North East providing this service.
We are really excited to see what 2018 brings to us all and hope to see some familiar faces and lots of new ones along the way too.
