Pregnancy massage can help to reduce depression & anxiety, relieve muscle aches and improve your mood and energy. It is a form of therapy using Swedish massage techniques, adapted to aid the pregnant lady:
- To relax muscular tension built up by big changes set upon your body during pregnancy. This can include aches and stiffness in your back neck and shoulders, due to your growing bump putting strain on your postural muscles. Reliving muscular tension around you neck and shoulders can also help to alleviate headaches that may arise during pregnancy.
- The lymphatic system is stimulated throughout massage, which eases fluid retention therefore reducing swelling and discomfort in your legs and feet and hands.
- Having time to yourself and a bit of a pamper allows the mind and body to engage, enabling you that all-important bonding time with bump (who usually likes to wake up and have a dance during massage!).
When can I have a pregnancy massage?
Anytime from your second trimester (12-14 weeks) onwards following you dating scan. You can have a pregnancy massage right up until you give birth.
What does it involve?
To start with you will fill in a small form to let the therapist know about your pregnancy (how many weeks, due date, problems that have occurred etc). You will then discuss what outcome you want from the treatment and what areas you would like to have worked on. Some ladies prefer just a back neck shoulder massage and others like to have a full body massage.
Pregnancy massage at Sunderland Physiotherapy Clinic is performed with the client side lying. You will never lie flat on your back or your front and also the bump won’t be touched. We have plenty of cushions and pillows for support and ultimate relaxation. The therapist will leave the room while you get yourself undressed and on the bed and in a comfortable position. Then just relax, close your eyes and enjoy a little you time!
Im 38 weeks pregnant, is it too late?
Absolutely not! You can have a pregnancy massage right up until your in labor if you wanted to! Having a massage later on in pregnancy will help to relax the mind and help to ease the thoughts of labour.
How often should I get a pregnancy massage?
As often as you like! You can have a treatment just as a treat throughout your pregnancy if you’re a lucky one and don’t have any particular aches. If you find your body is suffering with pregnancy aches quite a lot then a treatment every 4-8 weeks would be recommended. Again, this is all down to the individual and you will be advised after your treatment what would work best.
